Productive employment and decent work in rural areas

The target audience for the course includes: UN Country teams and FAO staff; Planners, policy formulators and advisors of agricultural and rural development related planning; Managers and technical staff in the ministries responsible for agriculture and rural development, and other government institutions contributing to rural development, such as the Ministries of Labour, Gender, Education, Youth, Trade, Industry, Social Affairs, Investment Authorities, etc.; Development practitioners; Private sector, producers’ organizations, trade unions and civil society organizations (CSOs); and general public.

• Main concepts and definitions related to productive employment and decent work in rural areas, as well as its importance for agricultural development, poverty reduction and food and nutrition security
• Main challenges faced by the different groups of rural workers, and selected approaches for improving their employment situation, with focus on rural youth and women, as well as for preventing and eliminating child labour in agriculture
• Ways of integrating employment and decent work in agricultural policies, strategies and programmes

The course consists of 6 lessons, ranging from approximately 20 to 85 minutes duration each:

• Lesson 1 – Understanding employment and decent work in rural areas: concepts and definitions
• Lesson 2 – The centrality of employment and decent work for agricultural development, poverty reduction and food and nutrition security
• Lesson 3 – Youth employment in agriculture
• Lesson 4 – Rural women’s empowerment in the context of the decent work agenda
• Lesson 5 – Preventing and reducing child labour in agriculture
• Lesson 6 – Integrating employment and decent work in agricultural policies, strategies and programmes

The online version of this course runs on the latest versions of the major browsers, such as Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox.

The downloadable version only runs on Windows PC’s and no additional software is needed.
