Welcome
This curriculum brings together self-paced courses and selected resources from massive open online courses (MOOCs) on forest monitoring for climate action. You can choose between two learning methods:
Option 1 – Take a single course:
Complete any individual self-paced course to earn a digital badge. This option is ideal if you want to strengthen your knowledge of a specific topic.Option 2 – Follow a full learning path:
Complete all mandatory courses within a learning path to earn the corresponding master badge. This option is recommended if you want to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the topic.Enjoy your learning!

LEARNING PATH
Establishing a national forest monitoring system
Total learning time: 3 hours
Learn how to build a robust and sustainable national forest monitoring system (NFMS) to ensure transparent reporting under the Paris Agreement.
To earn the master badge, you need to complete courses 1 and 2:
COURSE 1Forests and transparency under the Paris Agreement
Learn how to produce reliable and transparent forest data to meet the transparency requirements under the Paris Agreement.
1h 30m
COURSE 2Institutionalization of forest data
Learn how to institutionalize an NFMS and the critical role of transparency, sustainability and data sharing.
1h 30mOptional resources
You may also explore additional materials originally developed for MOOC participants. These resources are optional and allow you to deepen your knowledge.

LEARNING PATH
Conducting a national forest inventory
Total learning time: 15 hours
Learn how to plan, implement and sustain a national forest inventory (NFI) to produce reliable forest data over time.
To earn the master badge, you must complete the MOOC. It is divided into three modules, each providing a separate badge: Field data collection, Sampling and data analysis, and Data management and reporting. The master badge is automatically awarded upon completion of all three modules.
MOOCNational forest inventory - Learning
Learn how to prepare and conduct a forest inventory, design effective sampling surveys, apply key statistical concepts and tools, and manage, validate, and report high‑quality forest data for use at national and international levels.
15h
COURSE 2Measurement, reporting and verification for environmental integrity: Application
Learn how to conduct a sample-based area estimation (SBAE).
3h 45mOptional resources
You may also explore the NFI e-learning series which consists of 8 self-paced courses that served as the basis for the MOOC. This is an optional resource.

LEARNING PATH
Applying SEPAL
Total learning time: 13 hours
Learn how the System for earth observations, data access, processing and analysis for land monitoring (SEPAL) online platform can support land and forest monitoring for climate action.
To earn the master badge, you need to take the MOOC materials and courses 1 and 2:
MOOCSharing the experience on “Forest and land monitoring for climate action – SEPAL” facilitated course
Learn how to operationally apply high‑resolution satellite imagery to critical forest and land monitoring.
