Topic outline

This course provides an understanding of key concepts, terminology, practical tools and processes for incorporating gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI) in your projects, to make them more inclusive and effective. It also serves as a guide in considering the synergies between GEDSI and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by drawing on systems thinking concepts and processes when designing development projects.

This course is primarily intended for water and agrifood system professionals and programme officers working with stakeholders around the world:

  • Field-level programme officers and technical advisors in the water and agrifood sectors.
  • Academics and researchers interested in agrifood systems and water resource management.
  • Policy advisors and donors.

  • GEDSI and its importance in the context of water resource management and resilient agrifood systems.
  • The approaches that foster GEDSI integration, including the value of multi-stakeholder collaboration.
  • The analysis phase of the project cycle, with particular emphasis on how to conduct a GEDSI-responsive assessment.
  • The design phase of the project cycle and activities that target practical needs and strategic interests.
  • The implementation and monitoring, evaluation and learning phases of the project cycle.

This course consists of three lessons of approximately 30-60 minutes duration each:

  • Lesson 1 - Introduction to GEDSI in water resource management
  • Lesson 2 - Transformative GEDSI approaches
  • Lesson 3 - GEDSI in the project cycle - The analysis phase
  • Lesson 4 - GEDSI in the project cycle - The design phase
  • Lesson 5 - GEDSI in the project cycle - Implementation and MEL
