This course introduces bioeconomy with a focus on sustainable development using biological resources. It covers bio-based goods, the ‘4R approach’ (reduce, reuse, recycle, recover), and the importance of biomass. Emphasizing aquatic food value chains, the course highlights converting fish food by-products into valuable resources, addressing challenges, and strategies to reduce food loss and waste. Additionally, it teaches fish silage production as a cost-effective preservation method.

This e-learning course is intended for programme officers, technical specialists and extension agents who need to master bioeconomy principles and their application in aquatic food value chains, with a focus on by-product utilization. The course also targets academicians and researchers who want to learn more about the topic and teach bioeconomy in small- and large-scale fisheries and aquaculture.

  • The significance of bioeconomy and its role in agrifood systems with particular focus on aquatic food systems and the valorization of aquatic by-products and their impact.
  • Benefits, challenges and processing methods for transforming aquatic by-products into high-value products.
  • Fish silage production, its multiple uses, benefits and challenges, especially as animal feed and fertilizer.

This course is organized into three lessons of approximately 30 minutes duration each:

  • Lesson 1 - Bioeconomy in the aquatic food value chains
  • Lesson 2 - By-products utilization and application
  • Lesson 3 - Fish silage from processing by-products
