This six-lesson course explores how integrated resource management across the water-energy-food-ecosystems (WEFE) nexus in agriculture enhances water security, strengthens resilient and sustainable food systems, promotes responsible resource use and supports climate change adaptation and mitigation.

This course will benefit a diverse audience, such as:

  • National and sub-national policy makers and planners
  • Technical staff in ministries and development agencies
  • Regional teams engaged in integrated resource management
  • Private sector and financial institutions
  • Researchers, practitioners and students
  • Farmers and field workers

  • The WEFE nexus approach which aims to identify trade-offs and synergies of water, energy and food systems.
  • Interlinkages in the WEFE nexus that can be used to balance trade-offs and create shared benefits.
  • The WEFE nexus as a framework for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
  • Innovations that improve water-use efficiency and reduce environmental impacts.
  • Actions for operationalizing the WEFE nexus to improve cross-sector collaboration.

This course consists of six lessons of approximately ranging from 25-35 minutes each:

  • Lesson 1 – Introduction to the WEFE nexus
  • Lesson 2 – Defining WEFE nexus pillars and their interlinkages
  • Lesson 3 – Efficiency strategies across the WEFE nexus
  • Lesson 4 – Applying the WEFE nexus approach for climate change adaptation
  • Lesson 5 – Operationalizing the WEFE nexus
  • Lesson 6 – Learning from case studies
