Using a real-world-inspired case study, the course guides learners through an ex-ante benefit-cost analysis of a hypothetical investment, illustrating how evidence-based economic evaluation can drive better decision-making, resource prioritization, and advocacy for healthier diets and sustainable development.

  • The purpose and intended use of the FAO Methods Note and Benefit-Cost Analysis (BCA) Tool in guiding economic evaluations of nutrition-sensitive programmes.
  • The four-step ex-ante BCA process, illustrated through a real-world-inspired scenario.
  • The application of the FAO BCA Tool to conduct an ex-ante analysis, including data entry, calculation of returns, and interpretation of economic results.

This course consists of four lessons of approximately 30-60 minutes duration each:

  • Lesson 1 - Introduction to benefit-cost analysis for nutrition
  • Lesson 2 - The agrifood system pathways to healthy diets approach
  • Lesson 3 - The 4-step approach for BCA
  • Lesson 4 - Using the BCA Tool for analysis
