This course offers an overview of the multidimensional solutions (MDS) approach promoted by FAO to reduce food loss and waste (FLW) in the fish value chains. It also provides guidance on the process to develop an MDS strategy and describes how an investment plan to implement the strategy should be structured.

This course is primarily intended for people involved in decision-making and in initiatives aimed at reducing food loss and waste in fish value chains. In particular:

  • Policy makers and policy advisors
  • Technical specialists in governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
  • Academia and research community
  • Fisheries programme officers
  • Private sector and donor community

  • The characteristics of the MDS approach.
  • The seven entry points of the MDS approach and their rationale.
  • The key elements of an MDS strategy.
  • The MDS strategy development process.
  • The key components of an investment plan for an MDS strategy implementation.

This course consists of three lessons of approximately 25-35 minutes duration each:

  • Lesson 1 – The multidimensional solutions approach
  • Lesson 2 – Designing a MDS strategy
  • Lesson 3 – Developing an investment plan to implement the MDS strategy
