Topic outline

This course gives an overview on the complexity of child labour in agriculture and aims to raise awareness on the importance and urgency of addressing the issue. It provides foundational knowledge to understand the topic and explores what is and what is not child labour, its causes and consequences, as well as the risks and the hazards children can face in agriculture.

The course will contribute to the capacity development of:

  • policy makers and advisors of agricultural related policy,
  • agricultural programme designers and implementers,
  • agricultural producer organizations,
  • agricultural researchers, and
  • agricultural statisticians,

who wish and need to know more about tackling child labour in agriculture.

  • The importance of how agricultural stakeholders help prevent and reduce child labour and the foundation for understanding child labour in agriculture.
  • How the vicious cycle of child labour and poverty can be changed into a virtuous cycle.
  • Hazardous work for children and how risk assessments and protection measures can be established for safer and healthier conditions.

The course consists of  3  lessons, ranging from approximately  30  to  60  minutes duration each:

  • Lesson 1 – Overview of the course
  • Lesson 2 – Child labour in agriculture
  • Lesson 3 – Hazardous work and agriculture

The online version of this course runs on the latest versions of the major browsers, such as Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox.

The downloadable version only runs on Windows PC’s and no additional software is needed.
