Gathering comprehensive information about the forest is the crucial first step in the process of creating a forest management plan. This three-lesson course describes approaches to gathering information about the key components that define a forest. Key components include: the location and land-use history, the physical environment, the living environment, forest resources, and the social, economic and regulatory environment.




This course will be helpful to anyone interested in the subject of forest management, but it specifically targets:
- SMFE business owners
- Forest managers
- Forest management auditors
- Forest owners
- Local forest users
- Government/forest department officials
- Forestry teachers and students
- Information gathering as a prerequisite for a forest management plan.
- Approaches to gather information about the forest management history, the physical environment and the living environment of a forest.
- Approaches to gathering information about forest resources and ecosystem services.
- Approaches to gathering information about the social, economic and regulatory environment of a forest.
The course consists of three lessons of approximately 25 to 35 minutes each:
- Lesson 1: Describing the forestland: forest management history and the physical environment
- Lesson 2: Describing the forestland: the living environment and forest resources
- Lesson 3: Describing the social, economic and regulatory environment
