This e-learning course is part of FAO’s global efforts to strengthen the links between agriculture and forestry and advance sustainable agrifood systems. As the first course in a dedicated agroforestry series, it responds to the growing demand for accessible, science-based learning on the subject. Aligned with FAO’s strategic direction on Agroforestry 2023–2030, the course promotes agroforestry as a sustainable food production system, supports improved monitoring approaches, and guides countries in integrating agroforestry into national policies and strategies.




This course is designed for a wide range of participants engaged or interested in the transformation of agrifood systems through sustainable land-use practices, including:
- Producers
- Private sector
- Government
- Development organizations
- Academia
- Media
- Data and analytics
- Agroforestry as a strategy for transforming agrifood systems, combining economic viability with environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
- The diversity of agroforestry systems and their potential to strengthen livelihoods and restore ecosystems.
- The key economic, social and policy factors influencing agroforestry adoption and scaling.
- Enabling environments and partnerships that position agroforestry as a driver of sustainable and equitable transformation.
This course consists of two lessons of approximately 45 minutes duration each:
- Lesson 1 - An introduction to agroforestry
- Lesson 2 - Agroforestry as a sustainable production system
