This e-learning course aims to provide a clear understanding of farmers markets and their role in agrifood systems transformation. Recognizing that farmers markets are rooted in local agrifood systems, the course seeks to translate local‑systems thinking into local food policies, so policymakers and partners can identify actionable solutions that help markets to start, operate and sustain over time.



The primary target audience for this course are policymakers and professionals supporting agrifood systems transformation and farmers markets at the local, regional and national levels. It is also for anyone engaging in areas as diverse as food security, sustainable markets, rural development, urban planning and agroecology.

This course consists of three lessons of approximately 30-40 minutes duration each:
- Lesson 1 – Understanding farmers markets
- Lesson 2 – Transforming agrifood systems
- Lesson 3 – Creating an enabling policy environment
