This course provides the background and context on other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) in marine fisheries.

This course is primarily intended for stakeholders who are directly or indirectly involved in the governance and management of marine fisheries resources, and those considering (or directly involved in) the planning and facilitation of processes to recognize existing fisheries OECMS. Specifically, this course targets:

  • Government representatives
  • Fishers and fishworkers
  • Indigenous and local community representatives
  • Academics and non-governmental organization (NGO) representatives

  • Origins and definition of the OECM concept.
  • Benefits of OECMs and potential challenges of taking on the OECM label.
  • Principles of recognizing OECMs.
  • Marine area-based management measures implemented by the Fisheries sector.

The course consists of 4 lessons of approximately 30 mins duration each:

  • Lesson 1: What are OECMs?
  • Lesson 2: Opportunities and challenges of Fisheries OECMs
  • Lesson 3: Principles of OECMs
  • Lesson 4: Area-based management measures in marine fisheries
