This course provides guidance on the other effective area-based conservation measure (OECM) recognition process for Fisheries – which includes identifying, evaluating and reporting OECMs in marine fisheries.

This course is primarily intended for stakeholders who are directly or indirectly involved in the governance and management of marine fisheries resources, and those considering (or directly involved in) the planning and facilitation of processes to recognize existing fisheries OECMS. Specifically, this course targets:

  • Government representatives
  • Fishers and fishworkers
  • Indigenous and local community representatives
  • Academics and non-governmental organization (NGO) representatives

  • FAO’s suggested Fisheries OECM recognition process.
  • How to launch the Fisheries OECM recognition process.
  • How to screen proposed sites for compatibility with OECM criteria.
  • How to evaluate candidate sites against OECM definition and criteria.
  • How to facilitate timely, transparent and robust reporting of recognized OECMs.

This course consists of five lessons of approximately 20-45 minutes duration each:

  • Lesson 1: Introduction to FAO’s process
  • Lesson 2: Launching
  • Lesson 3: Initial screening
  • Lesson 4: Full evaluation
  • Lesson 5: Recognizing and reporting

This course runs on the latest versions of the major browsers, such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari.
