Traditional and local retail food markets are vital food environments that influence food access, dietary choices, livelihoods and community well-being.
This course explores the role of local and traditional markets in supporting food security, nutrition and resilient local food systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Learners will examine the governance, infrastructure, finance, digital innovation and capacity-building interventions that shape retail market performance, while exploring practical strategies to strengthen these markets as accessible, inclusive and sustainable sources of healthy food for communities.




This course is intended for:
- Policymakers and public authorities at national, sub-national and local levels in LMICs.
- Key non-governmental actors shaping food systems, including:
- micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs);
- non-governmental organizations;
- market leaders and vendors; and
- community-based organizations.
- Academicians.
- The role of retail markets in LMICs.
- How to create an enabling environment for retail markets to thrive.
- How public authorities can shape retail food markets.
- Strategic levers of action for public authorities to improve retail market systems, including collaboration and governance, infrastructure and operations, physical infrastructure, access to finance and capacity building.
