Topic outline

This course lays down the considerations for fieldwork and discusses plot-level variables as well as tree-level measurements.


This course is primarily intended for people who are involved in NFIs but can be taken by anyone with an interest in the subject. Specifically, this course targets:

  • Forestry technicians
  • National forest monitoring teams
  • Foresters and forestry students
  • Youth and new generations of foresters

  • Getting started with fieldwork.
  • Field team training and phases of training.
  • The importance of field manuals.
  • Collecting data on plots and sub-plots.
  • Measuring tree heights and tree diameters.

The course consists of 4 lessons, of approximately 20 mins duration each:

  • Lesson 1 - Preparing for fieldwork
  • Lesson 2 - Fieldwork training
  • Lesson 3 - Plot and sub-plot level measurements
  • Lesson 4 - Tree-level measurements

This course runs on the latest versions of the major browsers, such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari.
